This is my first time on here so I'm sorry if I sound like some1 new at this. I love to study and learn about King Tut and His wife. I find them both very kewl 2 study about. I have looked up about King Tut and found out that he was found died with about 130 canes and a "U" shaped headrest. Also, certain paintings in Tut's tomb were discovered which showed Tut leaning on a cane with his legs crossed awkwardly underneath him. Evidence showed that one of Tut's kids that were buried with him also had Scoliosis. So I got 2 thinking could he have died becuz of Scoliosis
Plzz tell me what you think about this.

Hi there King Tut Rocks.

My first time too, but this falls well within my expertise. Noone has ever died of scoliosis. Juvenile scoliosis, starting during the growth spurt years, can be quite debilitating, but never fatal. Scoliosis refers to when the spine essentially becomes 'spiralled' in any particular part.

Scoliosis in the foetus (and both Tut's daughters' skeletons were foetal) is even more common and is regarded often as an artifact of the foetus being constrained in the womb. Foetal scoliosis is usually self-correcting. Although it is considered to have some genetic basis, I am not convinced that the real genetic links have been ascertained.

Now the headrest you refer to was a common pillow in Egypt - as it was in Asia - and has no medical significance.

I know the picture you refer to showing Tut with a cane, and certainly there has bee no good explanation for this. I do agree that is not a casual
or artistic device. Paul Docherty, in his book "The Mysterious Death of Tutankhamun" tried to make out that Tut might have had a brain tumour, but as well as having no supporting evidence, this would be unlikely to lead to a problem with walking needing a cane.

The CT scan that was done just recently on the mummy showed absolutely no abnormalities. This included the scoliosis, which was within normally accepted range, and no disfigurement to his legs that would make him rely on a cane. (and BTW, that is not a cane, but a walking stick)
It is quite evident that he collected, not canes, but different, unusual walking sticks.
There were two headrests found in his tomb, and both were quite artistically beautiful, but not unusual at all. Headrests were quite common and also quite practical in the hot climate.
Other than the broken leg/knee, the CT scan showed him to be in very good health, quite typical of a young man of his age.
We will more than likely never know for sure the cause of his death. Hawass has stated that poisoning is a possibility, but there is absolutely no evidence. At this time, the only positive cause is blood poisoning, caused by a serious infection, which was caused by the break.

Headrests are still used today (or until very recently)I heard of a tribe of african nomads who only had about 3 possessions including a spear and a headrest.
With a headrest you lie on your side so you get air circulation about your head so the correct hight of headrest is important - an ajustable headrest has been found - perhaps for visitors who had not expected to sleep over?

Scholiosis is not fatal. there are two ways you can get it. Either you are born with it or you get it when you hit your growth spirt. Or perhaps a bit of both. But Scholiosis was not the only thing that immparied King Tut. He did infact have Clubed foot (his left foot that is) then to top it off he had bone disease which lead to bone loss in his left foot. he also had what is called Kelpill feil syndrome. to sum up what Kelpill feil syndrome is an there are several different types but i will try and sum up what type he had. Basically all vertibra in his neck were fuised together, so he couldnt turn his head. there are also other defects that come with Kelpill feil syndrom but i can only speculate on which one he had. would have to do more research. and last but not least, Cleft palate. all of this was due to inbreeding. Scientist and archaeologists have recovered the mummies of both the mother and father of Tut and have proven through dna that both parents were whole brother and sister. Not only did they recover Tut's parents but also who they believe is anaksunamun Tut's half sister and wife. Tests show that the mummy in question is the mother of both still born children found with Tut in his tomb. All complications with Tut and him and his wife into being able to conseve are all results of inbreeding
