I thought Alexandria was not in Egypt - it was called 'Alexandria BY Egypt'.

Alexandria IS in Egypt. Ever heard of the lighthouse of Alexandria? Anyway, it was founded by the macidonian Alexander the Great, and leaders often named their cities by the female forms of their name(Alexander=Alexandria) Alexander the Great conqured Egypt, and made Aalexandria. After he died, his general, or adviser, i forgot which, took the throne. his name was, Ptolemy. and that started the Ptolmatic regin.

It is in Egypt. It flourished *under* the Ptolemies, so I find it hard to believe that it wasn't in Ptolemaic Egypt.

Untrue. Julius Caesar, in defending the city from a Greek invasion, had several of his ships in the harbor burned, to make the harbor unusable for any invasion. The fire got out of control and the Library was burned. The Greeks did not "pillage the library and burned the building".

As far as I know, there was no "legal technicality" in assuming Alexandria was not part of Egypt. Psus is correct--the city was Egyptian.

I am certain I have it called 'by Egypt'. When Alexandria was founded it was a Greek city and at the time most Greek cities were independant or semi independant city states which could be why it was BY Egypt not IN.

i'm studying history and i have some work to do - a research project about alexandria in middle age ...

i would be very grateful if somebody can help me with more informations ...
maybe some links on the internet or books ... just something where i can find more informations! i'm from slovenia (europe) and i have a lot of problems with literature because in slovenia we don't any have book about this topic, and on the internet i didn't find anything useful.

Alexandria in middle Ages?

It was before the Ottoman Era. Then you can search for "Mameluke Era" in Google.

well, it's ottoman era too, and all the philospohy and kowledge - anything about alexandria in middle age (300/400 to 1500 A.C.).
