The names we read about in Ancient Egypt were originally written in hieroglyphs, then, later, many were written in Greek. What has always puzzled me is who was it that converted the names into English? Or when was it that the name s began to appear in the English language? Were they written before the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, or afterwards? Were there no English names of Egyptian characters until after the Rosetta Stone?

To put this another way: would Shakespeare (who wrote Anthony and Cleopatra etc) have been able to read English names of Ancient Egypt?

We read today of names such as Aken and Mahaf, but when were they introduced into English?

Things like this intrigue me.
