I guess the middle east is just so mad about westerners trying to take over everything so they refuse to let anyone near their history... I doubt that there wouldn't be this big a blow up if the current political situation were different.

I think Egypt has a right to claim that which is their's. Mount Rushmore wouldn't be the same in some other country now would it?

I also feel that it should be returned, and there's many more items of historical importance throughout the world that should also make their way home - the Elgin Marbles spring to mind.

Yes, it is nice to see them elsewhere in the world, but there's no reason why they can't go 'on tour' every decade or just feature replicas...there was a Tutankhamun replica exhibition that toured the UK a few years back and that was very good, in some cases better than the originals as the goods can be shown 'as were' when created and placed in the tomb rather than battered and worn as they are now.

It would be nice if people could go to Egypt to see the items in their homeland rather than have to travel all around the world to see originals from where they were basically, stolen, back in 'ye days of olde'.

Saying that, looks like I best take myself back down to the British Museum at the weekend and take more photos.

I think Egypt has a right to have back the things that had been taken away, but I can't agree with the rest of what Zahi Hawass said. He shouldn't forbid foreigners to excavate in Egypt. This is simply ridiculous. There are lots of good Egyptologists all over the world, and without their help the excavation of the yet undiscovered tombs, monuments, etc. will last a very long time.

Unfortunatly I don't think it is much of a free world anymore. With the 9-11 happening, I personally no longer feel comfortable in my own country much less traveling to Egypt; which I long to do. What has not been found would serve for us to learn by only, at least for the time being. I believe that we as a race (human's) need to concentrate on simplifying our live's, love one another (take care of our own). It's time to discover what lies in our own backyard's instead of looking for it in our neighbor's.
But you are also right, there is much still to be discovered in Egypt that man need's to learn about. But simply discovering it doesn't mean that they will take it as their truth and therefore their practice.
There is a time and a season for everything. My ex work's in Kuwait and his boss is from Egypt. His boss knew about 9-11 before it happened. It will come to light that America had more of a hand in it's down fall than any of us would choose to believe.
It is unfortunate.

don't be afraid to travel to Egypt, when I was there we were escorted by armed policemen everywhere we went... they protect tourists since the whole country lives from tourism...

touring with armed police isn't exactly my idea of a holiday. Beside's I would be traveling without a male companion and that doesn't sound nor feel comfortable to me, police or no police! It remind's me of mexico, and their law's are whatever suit's them.

I think that Zahi Hawass should not have said that foreigners can not excavate in Egypt, I mean I dont know how many excavators have been Egyptian, does anyone else know? I am not trying to sound rude or anything but I think that if it were not for foreigners excavating in Egypt then at least half of what has been discovered in Egypt would either not be discovered as of today or just being discovered. But i do think that Egypt has every right to try to get everything that was excavated and taken from their country back. So i say yes that Egypt should get the Rosetta Stone back.

I believe that the Rosetta stone should go back to Egypt. It belongs there. But, it could go on tour! What's wrong with borrowing artifacts for a couple weeks? But, it should ultimately belong to Egypt. Also, not allowing foreigners to excavate is like not allowing tourism with a purpose! We're all human, and that's how I view it. Who cares where you were born? We should all be able to study Egypt, and excavate there. Zahi Hawass (I wonder how he got the last three letters of his name? LOL, just kidding. j/k) was being racist.

I think that the Rosetta Stone should be returned to Egypt. I agree with the two post above about foreigners being able to excavate in Egypt. There is no reson why they can't.
