I was watching a TV programme, and I think it was in the early 1800's, the people back then burned the mummies. Some burned them to fuel up the train, so they burned mummies to keep the train going(HOW EVIL?). And other I cant remmeber if they burned them or snapped off a part, any hoo they crumbled up the mummy, and put it in srypu or something, and they ate it, becuase they believed that mummies has special powers.

Which COULD explain half of the missing mummies from tombs today.

Sadly this is true--an awful lot of priceless mummies were destroyed that way.

A favorite "entertainment" among the idle rich of Europe and America in the 18th century--and probably even later!--was to hold a "mummy unwrapping" party. Of course the partiers were treated to a most unscientific "unwrapping" by the host, which generally ended up with the total destruction of the poor mummy--but at least a good time was had by all! (Excepting the poor ancient Egyptian of course!)

This is unbelievable, huh? I can only imagine the facts that have been erased forever. In fact, I often wonder how many royal mummies were destroyed in the process. To think we will never know what has been taken or damaged is kind of scary. I am happy we have standardized rules . Now many generations can learn about Ancient Egyptian mummies and the culture of Egypt without damaging the mummy.

It's funny because Howard Carter also damaged the mummy of King Tut. He broke it into many pieces while trying to find jewels and gold. It's a shame as his mummy is now in pieces. Nonetheless, I do understand the fascination associated with royal treasure. In fact, I would not mind if i had a few pieces for me! He he he

Thank God we have new technology that can unwrap a mummy without destroying it. It's probably even better as now we have digital scans that will forever preserve each mummy forever. I hope one day all these digital scans will be available online so many people can enjoy them!

the only reason things are preserved now is because intact history is worth more.

the library of pergammon was found by going with locals to find the marble they burned to make whitewash, had it not been taken to europe it would now be lost

lot of important threads connecting the history have been destroyed by these idiots which would have helped the historians and archeologists.

Mummies were also used for fertilizer. We had a society talk about an animal mummy necropolis (dogs?) that was mostly emptied - probably about 1900ad.

still these people are having disbeliefs in power of mummies. how do they have rights to burn mummies or eating them. it is a foolish thing. they are destroy the national treasure
