In response to Neb Maat Re, a less hopeful, but equally probable scenario is that a Yu-Gi-Oh fan doesn't become interested in Egypt at all, but instead goes on believing that Yu-Gi was an ancient Egyptian Prince who used magical cards to fight evil priests by releasing 'Winged Dragons of Ra' and 'Obelisk Demons of Seth' to defeat them. Really though I don't care. So long as there are children, like Neb Maat Re's son, who know what they're talking about, I think that we need not worry that knowledge of Egyptian culture be lost forever. My only thought is that it is disrespectful that the Japanese have contorted the Egyptian deities.

Continuing on from Si-Amun's point, on T.V yesterday I saw a re-run of a program about the Temple of Edfu. A fat, smug American (no generalisation is intended here, honestly!) was looking at the beautiful statue of Horus at the entrance to the complex and shouting, "They worship a bird! Pahh! How dumb is that?! A bird- a bird can't even talk. . .etc."
To me, the idea of worshipping something that commonly appears in nature, and can be seen to possess powers beyond that of humans (like flying for example) makes far more sense than worshiping something that cannot be seen, or even described. I am an agnostic also I should say, and am in complete accord with Si-Amun.

I am beginning to feel that we are a bit too alike! lol. Perhaps it is us being Brits and most people on here being American, maybe we are just allies! lol. Anyway, it is good to have a like minded person on here, nice to know that I am not alone!
lol

I went to Burger King today for lunch with my mom. And as I stood in line, I glanced over and saw a HUGE stack of books (maybe comics or something) with Yugioh on the cover.

My thoughts.... Burn them. BURN the books.

It is nice to be able to criticize something without being opposed! Usually I tend to be far too argumentative and hypercritical, but what's the harm in that when everyone's on the same team?

I hope to meet some more like-minded people at this public Egyptology lecture in Bristol, in November. I really do feel kind of annoyed, as it seems that all of the people interested in Egyptology are spanned thousands of miles apart. Oh well- It makes me glad that I found this forum!

Any more complaints- I'm enjoying this!

I wish to make a complaint! hehe, us Brits are actually natural compliners, it is true! I want to complain about the lack of education on Ancient History further than Primary School in the British Education System! In Year 7 we did the Normans, in Year 8 we did the Victorians, in Year 9 we did the First World War, in Year 10 we did Russia from 1917 to 1992, and in Year 11 we did the Vietnam War and the Cold War. Now, in Year 12 we are studying Civil Rights in America, 1915-1968 and the Depression in America. To be honest all we ever study now is American History - the Bad bits! lol. Why couldn't we do the New Kingdom, or the Ptolemies instead!

I am extremely sorry that they're making you study our history. The most boring history you'll hear.

I am appalled to hear that you are being forced to study American history- it really is dire. Did you not get to choose which area of history to study at GCSE though?

Although most schools in Britain deny pupils a choice, our school gives us the option of studying Medicine and rulership through the ages (Egyptian-modern) or the history Germany (1871-1945). Although I chose the latter, I astounded another class' history teacher by reading the stelae in their textbook. Knowing the hotep-di-nesw formula makes you look like an Egyptological genius!
However, I am still trudging through sir Alan Gardiner's Egyptian Grammar-It really does start to get diffucult after the first five exercises.

I love history though, and really don't mind studying the modern bits. As I say, I might join this society that does lectures in Bristol. That would be soooo cool. They even arrange trips to Egypt, with professional Egyptologists.

O.K. Some American history could be described as interesting, exciting even- but compared to the Spanish Armada of 1588, or the rivalry between Elizabeth and Mary it seems feeble to me.

Maybe I'm just being patriotic! lol

Yes but to be honest you lot weren't that interesting this century were you! Studying the war in Vietnam was quite interesting though and I kind of enjoyed learning the background to Black Civil Rights, we learned all about the slave trade and the Klu Klux Klan. I know they were both kind of dark pages in your history but to be honest they were the most interesting. Today we were doing a critique of Woodrow Wilson and his actions after the First World War. Then next lesson we are learning about the three Republican Presidents that came after him.
I wish we did have a choice in what we did. It all depends on the teacher that you get. Some groups do the English Civil War, some do Fascist Italy. Last year they studied the French Revolution which would have been brilliant for me as I know quite a bit about that Shame, I would LOVE to study ancient Egypt for A-level. I would sooooooooo get an A in that one! lol.

We're doing the Treaty of Versailles at the moment- I just finished an Essay on the opinions of Orlando, Wilson, Clemenceau and Lloyd George. I concluded that the treaty was of just the wrong harshness. If it had been more lenient then the Germans would not have wanted a revenge war, but if it had been harsher then they would have been to economically weak to start another war. I am looking forward to the rest of the course- the Great Inflation and so on.

Have you chosen your A-Levels yet? I really want to do Ancient History and Archaeology- our school does them (Yipee!). I'll probably do Physics as well, as the sciences are my other passion.

That irritated me when I studied Treaty of Versailles in 9th grade. Most of the people in my class would pronounce it as how looks (ver-sail-lis) and not the actual pronunciation (ver-sai).

Well, when we studies the massacre of My Lai in Vietnam we heard about 400 variations. From Mi Lee to Mi Li it was everything. I stuck to My Lay but it got soooooooooo confusing.

I hate the English language. So stupid. i hate how ai pronounced as a and ei is pronounced as i. Doesn't make sense. Now the Japanese have it the correct way. ai is i and ei is a. So I'd pronounce My Lai as Mi Lie.
